‘Dancing at Lughnasa’
by Brian Friel
A memory of the narrator’s childhood growing up in rural Donegal in the 1930’s, Dancing at Lughnasa is a tale of the break-up of a household at the hands of economic and emotional strain. The narrator looks back on his years in the sisters’ home, memories in which language seemed to have surrendered to movement. A poignant, resonating story about family life, make-believe, remembering and remaking the past, betrayal and life spent groping towards love.
