Harold Pinter and Ballyshannon

Ballyshannon Drama Society’s production of Pinter’s ‘Old Times’ opens on Tuesday February 9th in the Abbey Arts Centre, Ballyshannon, but did you know this production also marks a return to Ballyshannon for Harold Pinter, considered by many to be one of the finest dramatists of the modern era? Pinter, born in Hackney, London, in 1930, was drawn to the theatre from a young age, playing Macbeth in his school production in 1947. He later enrolled in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts but felt uncomfortable with the snobbery of the institution, and quietly dropped out. In 1951 he replied to an ad in a theatre magazine for a part in a touring company, sending off a photo of himself, then auditioning…

‘Old Times’ opens February 9th!

Ballyshannon Drama Society return to the Abbey Arts Centre on February 9th with the premiere of this year’s circuit production, ‘Old Times’ by Harold Pinter, starring Rachel O’Connor as Kate, Richard Hurst as Deeley and Trish Keane as Anna, directed by Conor Beattie. The play is set on a late summer’s eve when husband and wife Deeley and Kate welcome Anna, Kate’s old friend and flatmate, into their home. Over the course of the evening, and many brandies, the trio recall the old times in London, twenty years earlier. It soon becomes obvious, however, that not all memories are recalled equally, leading to tension and questions for everyone…including the audience.

‘A Very Busy Year!’

Ballyshannon Drama Society in 2015 Fully energised by the highly successful One Act Finals in December 2014, rehearsals continued in January for the year’s circuit production, ‘God of Carnage’, with director Anne Mc Hugh and cast Richard Hurst, Tony Liston, Rachel O’Connor and Trish Keane meeting three or four times a week in preparation for the months ahead. The show opened in the Abbey Arts Centre in February, running from the 10th to the 14th, and was considered ‘a breathtaking and exhilarating experience’ by at least one well-known and highly respected critic. The Newtonstewart Festival on the 27th was the first date on the circuit, and it was a brilliant way to begin, as this was the first win for the play,…

Lady Gregory & Tale of the Gael with Trish Keane

Tale of the Gael featuring Patricia Keane return to the Abbey Arts Centre on Thursday, November 26th, with their wonderful show ‘Lady Gregory’s Legacy’. Our very own Trish plays the role of Lady Gregory, founder of the Abbey Theatre, patron of W.B. Yeats and the Irish Literary Revival, as she recalls moments from her fascinating and varied life. The Tale of the Gael musicians accompany Lady Gregory’s story, performing traditional music with a classical twist, blending Carolan tunes, contemporary songs and traditional dance. This is a magical evening of  music and drama in celebration of one of the most significant women in modern Irish history, and should not be missed, particularly in the era of #WakingTheFeminists!
